About Visiting Hanapepe Swinging Bridge:
In the early part of the 20th century, locals built a swinging bridge to allow them to easily cross the river. Over time, this bridge began to draw tourists who liked the idea of crossing a bridge with so much Island history.
Another reason this Activity on Kauai was so popular was the thrill of crossing what had become a rather rickety bridge. It would swing and creak, and people loved the idea of feeling like they had done something very daring in crossing the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge.
When Hurricane Iniki wreaked havoc on the Island in 1992, the damage to the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge rendered it too dangerous to use. When it was restored, it was also reinforced in a way that made this Kauai Activity a little less thrilling.
The creaks and groans of the old bridge were replaced by a much safer and sturdier bridge. It still swings, but those who cross the bridge no longer feel a real danger that at any moment they could be plunged into the muddy river below.
Still, crossing the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge remains a popular Activity on Kauai. Even though it is sturdier now, the bridge does still sway from side to side. It takes about 10 or 15 minutes to cross the bridge, which is still used by local farmers as well as tourists.
Spend some time exploring Hanapepe Town where you will find art galleries and small, locally-owned shops. Each Friday, the town hosts an Art Walk during which all of the galleries are open and works of local artists are on display.
