Attractions on Kauai | Kilauea Lighthouse
Kilauea Lighthouse is a Kauai Attraction located on the Kilauea Wildlife Refuge.
Some scenery is so impossibly beautiful that if you saw it on a postcard you would think it had been doctored. That is the type of beauty you’ll find when you visit this Attraction on Kauai.
About Kilauea Lighthouse:
Situated on a lava peninsula, the Kilauea Lighthouse was dedicated in 1913, and is a recognizable landmark on the Island. With its classical revival style, this Kauai Attraction is worthy of a visit during your stay on the Island.
In addition to the beauty of the lighthouse, visitors can also explore the wildlife refuge where the lighthouse is located. The wildlife refuge was established in 1985, and it is home to many rare seabirds.
If you’re a bird watcher, then this is an Attraction on Kauai that you will not want to miss. Even if you’re not particularly into birds, don’t miss the chance to see rare types such as the red-footed booby, Laysan albatross, wedge-tailed shearwater, and many others. These and other birds are protected by cliffs and the dormant volcano.
The lighthouse will also interest history buffs. This Attraction on Kauai features one of the last remaining Fresnel lenses in the country. There are only 6 other lighthouses in the United States that still use this 9,000 pound lens.
If you think the Kilauea Lighthouse looks familiar, that could be because it was featured in the movie Lilo & Stitch and in that film’s sequel, Stitch! The Movie.
During Hurricane Iniki, the visitors’ center was badly damaged. Happily, it was repaired a few years later, so today guests can visit to learn about the different features of the Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge.
