About Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve:
The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve offers the chance to enjoy a variety of Honolulu Activities while enjoying gorgeous, lush scenery. Take the tram to the rim of the crater and catch a splendid view of the bay. Hike along the ridge and down to the coastline, or enjoy a snorkeling tour in the crystal blue water.

Because of the abundant marine life, the snorkeling tour is a favorite Activity at this Oahu Attraction. The living reef is host to over 450 tropical fish. You will also see crabs, octopus, eels, and a number of sea turtles and rays. If you purchase an underwater camera, you can take some amazing photos of your underwater explorations.

You may also encounter the honu, or the Hawaiian green sea turtle. Thought to be gods in Hawaiian mythology, the creatures were reverenced by islanders. These gentle herbivores are now on the protected threatened species list, and although they are often happy to swim alongside of snorkelers, it is against Hawaii State law to touch one of these majestic creatures.

Lucky snorkelers catch a photo of the colorful and exotic parrot fish. Known for its bright colors and beak-like mouth, this is 1 of Hanauma Bay’s most beautiful fish. During your adventure, see if you if you can spot all 7 varieties.

The Millet seed butterfly fish is found only in Hawaii. This flat, tall, rounded fish travels in schools, and Hanauma Bay is teeming with them. Along the floor of the reef you may spot colorful sea urchins.

Moray eels, or one of the many varieties of the humu-humus, or the trigger fish also dwell here. The trigger fish are easily identified by their angular heads, and these colorful fish, with white bodies, contrasted with dark gray stripes, florescent blue accents and bright yellow eye markings, make for some stunning underwater photos.
