About the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park:
A visit to the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park is an Oahu Attraction that visitors of all ages will enjoy. Board the USS Bowfin and see the only remaining World War II submarine. Built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Virginia and launched on December 7, 1942, the Bowfin has an important and remarkable history. This Oahu Attraction is a must see – especially for those who are interested in Naval history.

In its time, the submarine and the submariners were top of the line. The advantage of the submarine was in its stealth. It is also noted in history as the source of the term “Hell’s Bells.: It was said that when an enemy mine was detected by sonar that the gongs aboard the sub were as chilling as the bells of hell.

The Bowfin completed 9 major patrols along with a number of other submarines, many that were sent out from the Pacific Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor. After the attacks, it was the submarines that systematically searched out the enemy vessels.

While visiting the Museum and the Bowfin Park, you will find a waterfront memorial that gives an account of each of the lost submarines. Other artifacts include items from the Bowfin, as well as other vessels. There is a fine display of battle flags as well.

A part of the museum is dedicated to the 52 lost submarines that were never found or never recovered. Of those ships found, such as the USS Lagarto and the USS Perch, you will be able to map their present locations and the progressions about any current explorations. All hands aboard these vessels are thought to have perished with the sinking. There are 5 such sites that are of significance to those interested in recovery and in naval history.

The Museum offers a number of events each year. For example, you can board the Bowfin for a sunset lecture and watch the Hawaiian sunset with drinks and appetizers all while hearing some amazing facts about the vessels that help continue our American freedoms.
